Hepatitis A Outbreak Prevention, San Francisco

What's Going On?

  • San Diego, Los Angeles, and Santa Cruz Counties are currently having outbreaks of hepatitis A infection.
  • Cases due to the same strain of hepatitis A virus are also in other California counties.
  • Transmission is occurring person-to-person; no commercial product is identified as being contaminated.
  • Persons at the highest risk are those who are experiencing homelessness or using injection or non-injection drugs (other than marijuana only), especially if they are in settings of limited sanitation.
  • There is no outbreak of hepatitis A among these populations in San Francisco.
  • San Francisco is responding to protect its population by preventing an outbreak of hepatitis A from occurring here.
